Peace talks to continue despite veto from militants: Musharraf
1/26/2007 9:49:46 PM
ISLAMABAD, JAN 26
The Indo-Pak peace process would continue despite the opposition from some militant groups, President Pervez Musharraf told the Hurriyat delegation led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq today.
In the second meeting with the delegation, which also included senior Hurriyat leader Abdul Ghani Bhatt and Bilal Ghani Lone, Musharraf said nobody can stop the peace process aimed at resolving Kashmir and other issues with India.
"We will not be cowed down by the threat of attacks and were determined to go ahead with our initiatives for a negotiated settlement of the Kashmir issue," the Mirwaiz said.
In their earlier meeting on January 19 soon after their arrival here, the President had said that elements hostile to the peace process that attempted to create misunderstandings about Pakistan's stand on Kashmir should be strongly countered and rejected.
Giving account of the talks, Farooq who is scheduled to leave for home tomorrow said the meeting with Musharraf focused on the future course of action to further the peace process. The President took us into confidence on the progress made to resolve the Kashmir dispute and discussion was also focused on Pakistani proposals of militarisation, self-rule and joint management, the Mirwaiz said.
Acknowledging the perceptible progress in the dialogue process with India, the President believed that the next three to four months were crucial as the two countries would focus on details and the substance of initiatives for resolution of the Kashmir issue, Farooq said.
Lone said Musharraf appreciated the initiatives taken by Hurriyat leaders to promote intra-Kashmir dialogue to support the peace process.
