| Protest in Srinagar over youth's custodial death | | | SRINAGAR, JAN 26
People here today took to the streets to protest the alleged custodial killing of a youth by security forces at Kralpora-Pattan in Baramulla district.
Citizens of Abi Nowpora near Khanyar in downtown Srinagar alleged that Mohammad Yakoob Mir (30), working as a labourer at Jhelum construction site, was picked up by security forces on January 21 and killed in custody yesterday.
They said the victim's father Abdul Aziz Mir had lodged a report with the Maisuma police station on the same day. Police said a kidnapping case has been registered and investigation is on.
However, a defence spokesman denied the allegations and said Mir was a militant and killed in an encounter with security forces yesterday.
But not happy with the army's statement, residents have demanded punishment to the security personnel responsible for "the cold-blooded murder of Mir".
