| Do Afghanistan strikes carry indicators for J&K? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 17: The recent terror attacks in Afghanistan have disproved two things. One that the Taliban fighters are on the run and second that the US war on terrorism has succeeded in eradicating the scourge from our neighbourhood. 48 deaths in Kabul, a jail break in Pakistan in which 400 jailbirds escaped, both were timed to send out a powerful signal by the Taliban. India has been one of the worst hit countries by terrorism and nobody would know the value of peace better than the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The recent developments in Afghanistan are highly disturbing since its fallout on the peace prospects in the State cannot be taken lightly. Lt. General, SA Hasnain, GOC of Army's 15th corps has asserted that although there would be no immediate effect of the developments in Afghanistan on the peace prospects in Jammu and Kashmir yet the GOC accepted that nobody could deny that the fallout of the developments in Afghanistan and Pakistan will reach Jammu and Kashmir in the long run. This should not be taken lightly by anybody, more so by those connected with governance in the State. The GOC also said the Army's stand had already been made clear on AFSPA. With the possibility of terror pushing itself to centre stage in our neighbourhood it is important that nothing should be done which would undermine the striking capacity of the security forces. Nothing should be done which would impede the dominance of the security forces. The security forces have done their job by fighting militancy and separatism in its various forms. This should not be interpreted as a licence for any misdoings by some individual members of the SF. There is a well worked out system of checks and balances which bring in accountability, discipline and control in the forces. Anybody misusing the name of the security forces must be brought to book and the improvement of cordial relations between the SF and the common man must continue. Yet, nobody can overlook the security and integrity of the country. Any attempt to remove the AFSPA at this juncture would only strengthen the hands of those who want to create safe havens for the terrorists in the State. Unless all stake holders agree without fear or favour, any lowering of guard will only result in an irreparable damage to the peace prospects which have been brought about by the supreme sacrifices of the men in uniform. |
