JAMMU, Apr 17: The 'Joggers' Park alongside river Tawi was inaugurated with great fanfare on April 1, but the park even after passage of 16 days still remains an ugly prank to Jammuites that too from the Government side as the work on improvement of the open space has been abandoned since the day one of inauguration. With no signs of upgradation of the park named after last Dogra ruler of the State Maharaja Hari Singh it would be more apt to describe that the authorities have probably made the public of Jammu 'foolish' by dedicating the park on April 1 (All Fools' Day). It is not only that the work on park's beautification has been stalled; the authorities have also locked the gates of the recreational area due to which most of the joggers have to leave the place in utter disappointment. However, it is quite funny that the gate was locked when a portion of the fencing along the road has been removed which gives easy access of the place to stray animals and urchins. Ironically construction work for the jogger's park is being carried at a snail's pace as the project was initiated by the Jammu Development Authority (JDA), about three years back making people in Jammu feeling it would never be a 'reality'. However, the commissioning of the park in a hurried manner on April 1, left people hoping that it would turn a reality very soon but the things once again are returning to similar traditional manner of Government works i.e. 'one step forward another backward.' Locals maintain that, despite spending lakhs of rupees on the Jogger's park, JDA has failed to complete the dram project of Union Minister for Health, Ghulam Nabi Azad, who inaugurated the park on April 1 and conceived it during his stint as Chief Minister of the State. Locals rue that despite repeated requests, the JDA officials have not restored the work on beautification of the park besides provision of other facilities like benches to sit, halogen lamps and drinking water. They said that if developed properly the Jammuites could find a suitable place to jog and relax. Talking to Early Times, a local Pritam Singh said that, "It is amazing that how easily our leaders befool the masses… On the inaugural ceremony, Ghulam Nabi Azad claimed that huge expenditure was incurred on the park which is nowhere in sight as the park presents an ugly picture in its present form…. Lack of infrastructural facilities inside the premises raised doubts that where the funds have been spent so far." "When the park was given face lift before April 1, it looked like that now the project will get completed soon but the high hopes of Jammu people dashed once more since the work to develop it further has been held up again," Singh added. |
