BJP's MCD victory has little meaning for party's J&K unit | Would BJP-NC 'nexus' make such gains possible....? | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Apr 17: BJP's victory in the MCD polls in the national capital should invoke serious deliberations and introspection within the party rank and file of the State unit of Jammu and Kashmir rather than celebrations that it broke into after the results were declared in Delhi. Would the Delhi results really have any bearing on the State level scene of BJP which is completely in fragments in disorder...? Delhi Pradesh BJP rode on a strong wave against ruling Congress owing to allegations of corruption and nepotism during the common wealth games and beyond, and the party cadre succeeded in convincing the voters that they could provide a better political alternative at the third tier of democracy; but contrary to the situation in Delhi, the Pradesh BJP in Jammu and Kashmir has suffered serious loss of credibility and trust deficit in the masses since last elections to the State Assembly wherein it succeeded in winning 11 seats in the backdrop of historic SASB land row agitation. While the party failed to put up a united front and represent the people of Jammu in the otherwise Kashmir centric polity of the State, the cross vote fiasco in the elections to the State Legislative Council, in which 7 MLAs defied party whip and voted against the party candidate gave a serious hit to the credibility of the party. Even as the 7 MLAs in question were ousted by the high command, the BJP had shot itself in the foot. Now, with elections to the urban local bodies in the State around the corner, BJP is finding itself battered and bruised. The leadership seems divided and weak and cadre looks demoralized and directionless. Under such circumstances, merely celebrating victory of the party in another State as if seeking a part of the credit would not help. Moreover, it is widely known there is nexus between some BJP and NC leaders, at the level of legislators too. In the backdrop of this reality, it is naive on part of the central leadership as also the local leadership to expect any gains at the political level on the lines of Delhi victory. |
