Telecom companies cheat PDD in J&K | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Apr 18: At a time when Power Development Department (PDD) is making every effort to achieve targets of electricity revenue, telecom companies continue to defy the directions to submit their regular power bills. Sources said that Jammu and Kashmir is losing crores of rupees annually due to the non payment of electricity dues by seven major telecom companies who have installed their infrastructure to provide cell services to subscribers. official sources said that most of the operators are drawing electricity to run their equipments without use of High Tension (HT) meters, due to callous attitude of the PDD. Sources further maintained that despite directions of the state government to submit site Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) copies to concerned department and also submit the copies of DoT and TRAI agreements, most of them have not bothered follow the directives. "We are losing crores of rupees every year, mainly because government has not taken strict measures to recover the dues. Despite several reminders, companies are ignoring the warnings", said an official. Sources claimed that these companies even have not completed all the legal formalities to run their services in the state. It is pertinent to mention here that PDD had also submitted a written complaint to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah few months back highlighting the issue, but no further step was taken. Department had also passed instruction to all the telecom companies to install high tension meters but despite threat of imposing fine, few companies have followed the orders. As per the PDD rules, for commercial usages, DG set is used and department take electric fare as per meter-readings. "DG set have been installed but department had failed to do metering at several places, particularly in rural and far-flung areas, where electricity is being drawn directly from the power lines", source said. When asked to comment on the issue, Minister of State (MoS), Power Shabir Ahmed Khan said that government is looking into the issue and strict action will be taken against the companies who are defaulters. "We have already asked the telecom companies to follow the rules or face disconnection of the electricity", he said. |
