`Govt servants run newspapers in Kashmir' | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 18: A noted journalist, Naseer Ahmad Ganie has caused ripples in the fourth estate by his report on `ghost' sub-editors who rule the roost in most of the media houses in the summer capital. The story posted by www.the hoot.org speaks about government servants who do a `favour' to the people in their respective offices during the day and edit copies of genuine journalists in the evening much to their annoyance. Naseer has won wrath of the newspaper owners and `ghost' sub-editors for his bold and honest report. As a safety measure he has choosen to stay away from the Press Enclave situated at posh Residency Road for the time being. "The ghost sub-editors or evening journalists have dealt a severe blow to journalism in Kashmir. Most of the journalists now prefer to seek a job elsewhere", he said. According to Ganie, Kashmir is losing a breed of honest and dedicated journalists. They prefer to become government rather than an insecure reporter who could be sacked anytime. "For the past one year many good reporters left reporting and joined the government services in the Valley. Some are working in the banks. Ironically, after joining the government, they come back to newspapers, seeking job of 'sub-editors' in the evening", he laments. Ganie believes that the government employee or the `evening journalist' has more say over decision making than the reporter who breathes journalism 24/7. "So reporters here have got a notion that they could work as government servants and at the same time be sub-editors in newspapers. They think being an 'evening-journalist' and a government employee by day increases your sphere of influence", said Naseer. The government, it is believed has full knowledge of how the world's second oldest profession is polluted by some vested interest elements active in newspaper industry However, no action has been ever taken against them. Shockingly the government has even failed to take action against the erring government employees who turn journalists in the evening. |
