Delhi verdict, Congress leadership in Jammu and Kashmir | Message From National Capital | | Rustam JAMMU, Apr 18: The Delhi electorate yesterday inflicted an humiliating defeat on the Congress and again voted the BJP to power in the prestigious Municipal Corporation Delhi (MCD), which now stands trifurcated into three corporations, one each for South Delhi, North Delhi and East Delhi. The Congress was defeated by the Delhi electorate in all the three zones, thus suggesting that anti-Congress wave is sweeping the country. It is obvious that the so-called Grand Old Party of India has become thoroughly unpopular in the country. The defeat the Congress party suffered in the national capital is not the only defeat it suffered this year. It suffered a humiliating defeat in the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MMC) at the hands of the Shiv Sena-BJP combine, which has been controlling the MMC for the last more than a decade. The Congress suffered a massive defeat in UP. It could win only 26 odd seats out of a total of 407 Assembly seats. It came fourth. It suffered a massive defeat in Punjab at the hands of Akali-Dal-BJP combine. It was for the first time in more than four decades that the incumbent Government retained control over the Government. The Congress suffered a massive defeat in Goa at he hands of the BJP. It could not capture even 30 per cent of the seats in the 40-member House. In Uttrakhand, where the Congress was expecting a remarkable victory, could win only 32 seats out of a total of 70 seats, just one seat more than the BJP's tally of 31. The Congress formed a ragtag Government in Uttarakhand - a Government which is unlikely to survive. Earlier in 2011, the Congress had suffered massive defeats in West Bengal, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat, Odisha and Madhya Pradesh in the Assembly elections, by-elections and civic elections. In Kerala as well, the Congress did not fare well. It could win only the number of seats required to form the Government and its vote share was just .05 per cent more as compared to the Left front. Why are the people across the country rejecting the Congress party and bringing to power other formations? Why because the people are fed up with the socio-religious, politico-administrative and economic policies of the Congress-dominated UPA Government. Why because the people across the country are fed up with the foreign policy of the Congress-led UPA Government. Why because the people are fed up with the Congress's Kashmir policy, as also its policy towards Pakistan, terrorism and Islamic radicalism. Why because the people are fed up with its appeasement policy. Why because the Congress-led UPA Government has virtually become the Government of the corporate houses. Why because the Congress-led UPA Government has utterly failed to contain inflation and control the price situation. Why because the people are fed up with this Congress-led UPA Government because it is involved in multi-crore scams and is corrupt from head to toe. Why because the Congress-led UPA Government has undermined the democratic and constitutional institutions, including the Supreme Court, the Comptroller and Auditor-General and Election Commission. The truth, in short, is that the Congress is being considered by the people across the country as the most corrupt, arrogant, undemocratic, irresponsible and anti-people formation. What is the message from the national capital? The message is that the Congress has outlived its utility and that the people are only for those parties which actually deliver and pursue the nation-centric and people-centric policies. The real message is that the people want a credible alternative to the Congress party. Will the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress leadership learn lesson from the Delhi verdict and undo the wrongs it has committed so far? If it wants to remain relevant in the State in general and Jammu province in particular, it has no other alternative but to deliver by identifying itself with the people's sentiments. In other words, it has to discard its old line and adopt a new one that caters to the needs of the people, protects and advances the national interests and promotes democracy and secularism in the State. There is no other alternative. Any failure on its part to read the writing on the wall or learn lesson from the Delhi's unambiguous verdict would only help its political rivals replicate Delhi in Jammu province. In Kashmir, Congress has little or no support-base. Whatever support-base the Congress has in the State, it is basically confined to about 13 to 15 Assembly constituencies in Jammu province. Which means the Congress was never strong even in this province with whose help it has been sharing power since 2002. |
