Strengthen border security grid to check Taliban spillover
4/19/2012 1:30:11 AM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 18: When Pakistan's Interior Minister, Rehman Malik, voiced fears over the possible infiltration of Talibans into the Indian territory he seemed to be trying to absolve the establishment in Islamabad of any responsibility for any rise in the level of extremist activities in India.
In a bid to convince India of Pakistan's commitment to help India to contain terrorist activities Malik has said that the Talibans may enter into India from the Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA) province.
Even if one relies on Malik's contention and believe that the Talibans may sneak from the FATA into the Indian Territory one is not prepared to accept that such infiltration is possible without any direct or indirect assistance from the Pakistani Army.
Judged by the level of surveillance and patrolling on both sides of the LOC and the IB militants, including the battle hardened Talibans may not find it easy to infiltrate into the Indian territory without the assistance of the Army on the other side of the border.
Rehman Malik is not wrong when he talks about the possibilities of Talibans from Afghan-Pakistan border crossing into the Indian territory. At the same time one wonders as to why the Talibans did not attempt at crossing into the Indian territory when the Pakistani forces carried out massive operations against them in the Swat valley and Waziristan belt over a year ago ?
There are two possibilities. Some Talibans may have crossed into the Indian territory in Jammu and Kashmir as activists of Lashkar-i-Toiba,Hizbul Mujahideen or any other outfits over a year ago when the Pakistani forces launched the operation flush out of the Talibans in the Swat valley.Since their number was quite small it did not deserve any notice by the Indian security forces.
Secondly, the ties between India and Pakistan had not improved to the level one experiences at present and it is out of this improvement that Pakistan's interior Minister has been emboldened to caution Indian about the possible influx of the Talibans into the Indian territory.
Malik's note of caution to India is based on the inputs of intelligence agencies in Pakistan. He has also assured India that Pakistan was willing to provide any help to New Delhi in case of a spillover of Talibans into the Indian territory.
Already the Indian Defence Ministry has directed the troops to further strengthen the security grid on the LOC and the IB not only in Jammu and Kashmir but also in the western and the Eastern sectors. Following the latest statement from Pakistan's interior Minister on possible rise in the ingress level indications are additional companies of troops may be deployed on the entire border in Pakistan.
Experts are of the view that besides upgrading the security grid on the LOC and the IB New Delhi needs to tell Islamabad that it should give strict and clear instructions to its Army authorities to ensure that militants, including the Talibans, be prevented from infiltrating into the Indian territory and once that was done it would encourage New Delhi for keeping open the channels of dialogue.
