Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 18: With Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad taking active part in State politics for last one year and visiting State frequently the speculations are ripe that former Chief Minister is trying a comeback in State politics.
According to sources Mr Azad during last one month visited thrice J&K to remain in close touch with the Congmen and people especially in Jammu region. First he visited his home district Doda last month and later he visited Jammu during the first week of this month to address a Congress rally and also unveiled the statue of late Maharaja Hari Singh in front of Shiv Temple at Tawi bridge.
And withing a fortnight the strong Congman again visited Jammu today and addressed a Congress rally at Billawar and also a one day convention of Backward Classes Union at Sidhra near here.
The main achievement of Mr Azad's today's visit is that entire Backward Classes Union including its office bearers and district and tehsil units merged in Congress. This shows that Mr Azad is trying to consolidate the Congress in the State in general and Jammu region in particular where he has a support base also.
Sources said with NC losing ground in Kashmir and PDP emerging as a viable alternative to the coalition in the State Azad will keep his cards open and Congress is open to coalition either with NC or PDP after the next Assembly elections. Though Congress High Command has not shown any inclination to topple the Omar Abdullah Government at present due to its own compulsions at Centre, yet the Party will try to create a situation in the State in which it can be major stakeholder in the formation of next Government in the State, sources said.
Sources said this was the reason that Azad has been fully concentrating on the State and to make his position more stronger and checkmate his rivals within Party the Union Health Minister will leave no stone unturned to get one or two of his loyalists inducted in ensuing Cabinet reshuffle.
This way the Congress leader will not only silence the voice of his rivals within the party but will also be able to dictate terms to coalition partner on every policy decision, sources said, adding to ensure his position becomes more and more stronger in the State Azad got one of his loyalists elected to Upper House by annoying a veteran Congress leader.
Sources said in case the Congress manages to win over 25 seats in the State during next Assembly elections Mr Azad will be a strong contender for the Chief Minister's post and for this purpose the Congress is concentrating on Jammu region where the opposition BJP has received a jolt after the expulsion of its six sitting MLAs including a veteran leader Prof Chaman Lal Gupta from party.
To take full advantage of the situation in the region Azad was frequently visiting the State to boost the morale of Congmen and also prepare fertile ground for the Party which will face the first test during the Municipal and Urban Local Bodies elections much over due now.
