| Republic Day passes off peacefully | | | JAMMU, JAN 26 Officers of various security agencies including state police heaved a sigh of relief with the Republic day celebrations having passed off peacefully in the state of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday. The celebrations were held, besides Srinagar and Jammu, at all district headquarters and tehsil headquarters under tight security cover. The sports stadia in Srinagar and Jammu had been converted virtually in to fortreses with columns of police and paramilitary forces having ringed the playfields within and outside to ensure incident free celebrations. Infact, the areas in and around the sports stadia in the two capital cities of the state had been made out of bounds for people and sports lovers during the last 10 days. Metal detectors besides sniffer dogs had been pressed in to service for sanitizing the sports complexes. The passenger transport services were regulated and restricted in these areas. What seems to have gladdened the hearts of the government functionaries was the participation of large number of people in all these functions. According to DIG Srinagar Farooq Ahmed , the Republic day functions were incident free and a large number of people were present not only in the Bakshi stadium but at other district headquarters where the ministers unfurled the National flag and took the salute at an impressive parade presented contingents of armed forces, NCC cadets and students of educational institutions. Students from various schools and artisits presented cultural programmes. In Jammu, IG Jammu range SP Vaid said that the Republic day celebrations passed off peacefully in Jammu province as no untoward incident was reported till late evening. In MAM stadium, a helicopter showered flower petals when the governor Lt-Gen (Retd)SK Sinha hoisted the National tricolour and took the salute of the impressive parade.Chief Minister GhulamNabi Azad was also present along with his wife Shameena Azad.Council of ministers, legislators, senior officials of the police and state administration were present in large numbers at the parade.
