Childline, DLL team, Law school students visit slums of Maratha Basti

Jammu , Apr 19 : Childline Jammu and the Department of Lifelong Learning, University of Jammu today organized a one-day field visit to the slum areas of Maratha Basti, Trikuta Nagar, in collaboration with The Law School, University of Jammu. The objective of the visit wasto assess the needs of the migrant population living in the area with special focus on the problems of the children living in this slum area. Maratha Basti which is inhabited by the migrant population from Maharashtra, is stated to be one of the biggest slum in Jammu district.
The team of Childline, Jammu including Dr. Kavita Suri, Nodal Director Childline and assistant director, Department of lifelong learning, University of Jammu, Rohit Khajuria, City Coordinator, Manjari Singh, Centre Coordinator, Gurmeet Kaur, Lovely Sharma, Sakshi Bali and Rajan Sharma visited the entire slum area. The students of The Law School, University of Jammu (8th and 10th Semesters) who visited the area included Nitin Sharma, Preeti Gupta, Archana Bhan, Komal Bhat, Ananta Sharma, Faisal Sidique and others. During the visit various issues came up which needs immediate attention of the concerned authorities and the civil society.
There are no educational facilities being provided by the government to the children in the slum. The team got to know that there is only one private school running in the area which is in fact, a philanthropic effort of a government teacher. Running in a tented accommodation, the school is also without basic facilities. The inhabitants of the Basti who interacted with the visiting team told them that they wanted to send their children to the school but they were denied admissions in the nearby schools. Their children who were born in Jammu only were also denied birth certificates by the Jammu Municipality, the parents told the team.
