Demand for cross-LoC banking, communication facilities gains momentum

Jammu, Apr 19 : If the current thaw in the Indo_pak relations remaind stable the demand for setting up cross LoC phone and banking facilities is likely to be conceded by the coming autumn season. Official sources said that people who matter in New Delhi and Islamabad have started discussing the demand for reopening of the communication and banking channels between Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan administered Kashmir.
These two issues besides the one pertained to visa rule simplification for promoting people to people contractor likely to be discussed by the two sides during the ensuing meeting of the Home secretaries of India and Pakistan.Sources said that no doubt both New Delhi and Islamabad have been sounded about the need for reopening two other border routes, including Suchetgarh-Sialkot road,for trade and travel the two sides are said to give importance to the setting up communication and banking facilities between the two sides.As far as Jammu and Kashmir Bank is concerned its top functionaries have conveyed to New Delhi their readiness to set up one bank branch at Muzaffarabad once permission was given to it.A senior Bank official told that once the banking facilities between Srinagar and Muzaf farabad and between Jammu and Rawlakot were set up it would not force the traders on either side of the LoC to bank on barter system. Leaders of trade and commerce in Jammu said that keeping the cross LoC trade dependent ohe barter system was against the economic interests of the trad ers. Explaining it they said that at times traders on this side of the LoC are forced to accept goods,that are not required or are not in demand,in exchange for the goods they had exported to Muzaffarabad or to Raw alakot. These traders said that once the communication and banking facilities were set up the level of cross LoC trade was expected to be double within one year. They have urged Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, PCC Chief, Saif-ud-Din Soz,two union Minist ers,Ghulam Nabi Azad and Dr Farooq Abdullah,to raise this issue with the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, who may persuade his counterpart in Islam abad,Yousuf Raza Gilani,to initiate fresh measures that could increase the level of trade and promote people to people contact.
