JAMMU, Apr 19: Prof Virender Gupta, president of Jammu State Morcha hails the decision to hold electoral revision for urban local bodies.
However, he asked for the complete revision and for the issuance of the fresh Voter Cards.Gupta said the Voter Cards issued so far are misleading about the address of the voters and cannot be considered as the identity card for other purposes.
Even it is difficult to locate and identify once name in the voter list.
Such lapses effect the turn over of the voters in the elections. Instead of mentioning actual address of the voters what is noted in the Voter Card is the Kumba Number (Morha Number) which is as strange for the concerned voters as to the agents of the political parties and the nominees of the election commission. Prof Virender Gupta suggested for a continuous process of the registration of the voters. Any person who comes to reside in a locality should get registered his name and of his family members in a specified office (it can be a school, hospital, police chowki, etc.).
The names of the new residents then should be communicated to the concerned central office identified by the election commission for registration as voters after the end of every month.
This procedure would end the long drawn process of registration of voters, which is faulty and is always open to questions, he added.
JSM president said that it will also help in maintaining law and order and keep the society disciplined and crime free. This process shall also ease out the problems and humiliation that the citizens have to face in getting themselves registered as the voters, he added. |
