Jammu, Apr 19: Maintaining that 'Reservation' granted to Gujjars-Bakerwals community in Jammu and Kashmir under Scheduled Tribe category is not an aid or a charity but was a right of our tribe. In a meeting of executive body of Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation - a frontal organ isation of Gujjars-Bakerwals -held here today to celebrate 21st anniversary of grant of ST Status - as on same day in 1991 the J&K Gujjars-Bakerwals were granted ST status by Government of India by including these tribes in Constitution of India. Addressing the meeting Dr Javaid Rahi, Secretary, Tribal Foundation said that the reservation share was provided to each tribe or cast on the bases proportion of total population of a cast or tribe. 'We are not eating the share of others,' said Rahi and added that our tribe is getting lesser share proportionate to their population in J&K. He said Gujjars-Bakerwals got ST Status on 1991 and 10% reservation was granted to them along-with 10 other tribes to provide adequate representation to them in employment and promotion which need immediate enhancement. He said although J&K tribal including Gujjars are historically oppressed and denied equal opportunity in society and were thus under-represented in nation-building activities but now it's a time to prove our-selves as a forceful and vibrant identity of India. He impressed upon tribal youths to struggle hard and not to depend upon 10% quota in State and 7.5% in central jobs under scheduled tribe category but to think above of all this. He asked the youth to try their luck in private sector or outside country too.
The speakers further stated that after laps of 20 years of reservation Gujjars are still struggling hard for grant of Political Reservation, Forest Rights, Rehabilitation of nomads, Right to Education, Vote for nomads and other rights viable to tribes in India.
