Run for Fun: A police initiative to find "ears and eyes" in public, promote good health | | | Bharat Bhushan JAMMU, Apr 19: A J&K police initiative to connect more with people notwithstanding the occasional incidents of custodial deaths and tortures in lock-ups would be on display on the roads here on April 24 when several people, including senior citizens and kids, would run for fun.The J&K Sports Council has also been involved to ensure larger participation. The Council Secretary Kiran Watal has, in turn, issued a circular, asking sports organisations to take part in the event. Hectic efforts were being made to ensure maximum participation on the day, a police officer said. The event was expected to be of great importance for police as through it, they were likely to find at least a few "ears and eyes" to act as "informers" and help them in controlling crime and the spread of social evils. The officer, however, said the idea behind organising this event was to promote good health among people and also to give them a message to keep their surroundings pollution-free.The event has been divided in four categories. While for senior citizens, families and kids, the track would be of 4 km length, for 16 year olds (boys and girls), the track length would be 12 km. 21.5 km would be the track length for half marathon (only males, with no age bar), while for marathon open (no age bar), it would be 32 km.The event, being held under the supervision of ADGP (Armed) K Rajendra, would be flagged off at 5 am on April 24.In the 12 km race, eight runners, who finished first, would be given cash awards. Eight awards would be given to males and eight to females. The first award is of Rs 5,000, while the eight is of Rs 5,00 in both the categories.
