Omar's tweet on 'Darbar Move' draws flak
4/20/2012 12:52:27 AM
ET Report
JAMMU, Apr 19: Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah's latest tweet on Darbar Move has been taken with a pinch of salt by the people here. Omar while responding to one of his followers on micro blog website twitter termed Darbar Move as waste of money.
He went further to say that it (Darbar Move) was `escapist'. "I agree. We run away when people need us most and (they) face the most difficulty. The Darbar Move is escapist," he said. Omar still seems unaware of the history of the State. The practice of shifting capital was started by the Dogra rulers some hundred years ago not just to escape scorching heat or winter chill. It was because of a variety of political reasons. The Dogra kings wanted equitable development of both the regions of the State. The tweet conveys his mindset. Does he want to keep the offices permanently at Srinagar? If yes, Omar can be safely accused of nurturing chauvinistic tendencies.
The wisdom behind the practice can be appreciated by the fact that Dogra Kings preferred to make Urdu the official language of the State. They could have easily opted for Dogri. They knew people in all the regions of the State spoke and understood Urdu. It, therefore, was the only way of keeping the heterogeneous State together.
Similarly to address the governance deficit they devised a method which came to be known as Darbar Move as the time passed. There is no denying the fact that some voices of dissent were raised against them especially in the Valley but the practice has worked notwithstanding the huge expenditure incurred on it. The political experts have a word of advice for the Chief Minister. The State is passing through a crucial phase. Vested interests are out to create a wedge between various regions. In such a scenario, people must refrain from making provocative statements.
