Azad's fresh direction to party: No urgency on ULB polls | 'Both NC, Cong working in tandem on delaying tactics' | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 20: Notwithstanding the 'hollow' assertions of thecoalition Government on holding of UrbanLocal Bodies Polls as early as possible, these appear to be a distant dream fornow. Despite preparedness on front ofsummary revision of electoral rolls having been put on fast track, conductingof elections is unlikely , at least for few months, thanks to the 'strategic understanding' of both partners ingetting these delayed on one or the other pretext. Sources said while ruling National Conference has not yetmade its cards clear about its willingness nor on preparedness for ULB polls, its alliance partner Congress is not interested this political exercise to beconducted very soon. Sources said during former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad'srecent visit to Jammu, a sizable number of Congress leaders including some Ministers conveyed to him that party should not agree nor show any keenness onholding of polls for now for more than reason. Sources also added that it wasconveyed to Azad in a detailed manner as to what is the position of the partyin various pockets at the ground level ,an assessment by local leaders that may not favour the party inregistering good performance. The party's position at ground level even in those areaswhere it would have strong hold in terms of the wards is not all that favourable nor has the partyyet settled issue as to on what pattern and mode the elections would be held vis-à-visits ties with the alliance partner. Since Congress wants to grab majority ofthe seats in both the Corporations, it doesn't want to go to polls in themanner and State of unpreparedness it has at present, sources said adding thatthis clear picture was elaborately described to the Union Health Minister twodays back. It is in the backdrop of this 'ground assessment' that Azad is learnt to have discussed thematter with senior leaders of the party , including Deputy Chief Minister TaraChand . Azad, sources said is learnt to conveyed to his partyleaders to convey to NC its unwillingness for now on holding the polls. Sourcesalso said that Congress leadership has discussed with the ruling partner andhinted its sense and State of no urgency in conducting the ULB polls withoutcompleting some ground work and mandatory'political homework.' With both the allies looking for new excuses on delaying thepolls, the coalition, it is now crystal clear is hell bent to weaken the democraticinstitutions and for this both the coalition partners are strategically workingin tandem under a design. It was the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who firstdeclared his intension of holding UrbanLocal Bodies elections after which the Government has been giving one or the reason for pushing it ahead almost for indefiniteperiod. |
