Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 21: The higher education department of Jammu has increased the fees for various undergraduate courses being taught at Government Degree Colleges across the state. The fees have been increased by 10 percent from this academic session and the sources said that the committee which has been constituted for the revision of fees structure has also been given the power to review it after every two years. The sources further added that the new fee structure will be applicable to BA, B.Sc, B.Com, BBA, BCA and other courses that are being taught at various government colleges in the state. The last fee hike was made in the year 2004, when the department had revised the fee structure after a decade, which was also opposed by the student organizations. Officials said that the new fee structure has been implemented as per the guideline of the Ministry of Human Resource Development. However, the private colleges of the state will not be applicable for the new fee structure and hence they will be issued a separate notification, after getting an approval from the government. The sources also said that though the higher education department had issued a notification on January 12, but it had not given much publicity to the new order, keeping in view the likely opposition from the student organizations, which were protesting against the rising cost of education in the state. According to the revised fee structure, the department has also ordered that the existing charges for application forms for admission to a particular course or a particular college and the cost of prospectus of about 100 pages should exceed Rs. 60. Muqabil Chisti, Director, Colleges said that the increase is not that big and that they have hiked the fee by 5 to 10 per cent, keeping in view the increase in the cost of education. He also added that even the revised fee is much lesser than what is being charged by the private colleges. The hike had become a necessary thing as the additional funds generated from it would be utilized for the welfare of students, he said.
