| BSF Trooper commits suicide | | | Srinagar | January 27 Another suicide by a Border Security Force Trooper on the eve of Republic day in north Kashmir has put a question mark on the effectiveness of stress management programmes among troopers. Police said that a BSF Head Constable, identified as Hari Om Sharma of 133 Battalion BSF ended his life by shooting himself with his service rifle inside the battalion camp at Natnoosa in north Kashmir Kupwara town late Friday night after the republic day celebrations were over. While the reason for the paramilitary trooper's extreme act was not immediately known, a case has been registered in Police Station Kupwara in this regard. The body of the trooper has been sent for post mortem and the report is being awaited. This is the second incident of suicide over the past five days in Border Security Force. Earlier, c onstable C P Nishad of 143 battalion posted at Raj Bhavan had committed suicide on January 22. Security forces had started a comprehensive stress management programme that includes counseling at initial stages of stress and better recreation facilities to prevent the problem from worsening. The programme also includes treatment of the stressed patient at special centers in Srinagar. The continuation in suicides, however, questions the effectiveness of the stress management programmes among security forces that had been initiated after suicides rates reached as high as 100 per year. Over the last five years, 500 troopers from army and BSF have ended their lives while some have even shot their colleagues. "There is a constant threat to a life of a trooper in Kashmir. Also the fact that troopers live away from their families intensifies the problem," said a high level officer in BSF. "It is unfortunate that such acts take place but we are trying our best to check the trend." Suicides have also occurred among Central Reserve Police Force ranks lately as well after the paramilitary force was handed over the control of Srinagar. Only by the end of last year, three CRPF personnel killed themselves while on duty.
