| What Abdullahs didn't do, Mufti did in 3 years for Poonch | | | Salil Raina
Jammu, Apr 21: Abdullahs during their tenure failed to do justice with Poonch district as they successively befooled the masses with their sweet speeches filled with butter and jam and the poor and innocent public of Poonch were trapped by their sugary speeches during elections. Now the people of Poonch have realized that they did a big blunder by voting such persons to power in the past.
District Poonch which has its own golden history before 1947, suffered a lot as far as development is concerned by successive State Governments after Independence. Even after six decades of independence, Poonchites are considered as people from far flung areas. The question arises, who did a foul play against Poonchites?
When the 1996 election took place and Farooq Abdullah became Chief Minister after extensive years of Governor's rule, everybody thought, now this Government would do constructive work for Poonch district. Barring some achievements, no major development took place in those six years. Corruption was rampant in those years. Unemployment was the biggest problem and the then Chief Minister's decision of banning the recruitment for three years added fuel to the already burning fire. Many unemployed youths became estranged as this community suffered mentally due to that decision of the Govt, but behind the curtains, blue-eyed boys of the then ruling party got prize postings. Many scams took place. The then Govt. lost its credibility. This fact could not escape the notice of the former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, when he spoke about J&K election, "These elections will be historic and fair for the people of J&K" clearly indicating that the Centre fully knew the trust deficit among people of J&K.
After the historic elections of 2002, when the change of guard took place, within next three days of assuming his chair, Mufti Sayeed landed in Poonch and after hectic deliberations with prominent citizens, administration and interacting with the common man, he formed constructive policies for Poonch district which started seeing the light of the day.
On the employment front, he directed employment agencies for making recruitment on purely merit basis and this decision of Mufti sent a wave of happiness among students community in Poonch district. Many appointments were made fairly, the step which was welcomed and appreciated by all. People started feeling the results of good governance.
Poonch, even after Independence remained the only district without adequate Power supply and was dependent on 33 kv transmission line. After assuming power, Mufti immediately sanctioned the 133 kv transmission line for Poonch district and today the power position in Poonch is quite remarkable.
It was Mufti who had a detailed discussion with the former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee over opening of LoC from Chakan-da-Bagh that brought Poonch to International map and slowly proved to be the bridge between two neighboring countries. His much talked about "Healing Touch Policy" paid dividends for the common man as he wanted to deliver justice at the door steps of the common man.
People of Mandi tehsil were the worst sufferers during the last six decades as people had to travel to Poonch for even a small work. Even, it was Mandi area that played a crucial role in electing successive MLAs but those leaders didn't bother for solving their grievances. Mufti gave them relief by granting tehsil status to Mandi. Now large number of facilities are available to the people of Mandi at their door steps. It was the vision of Mufti that he did this for Mandi people.
The people living in the border areas are all praise for this visionary person and shower their best wishes on him.
Likewise, work on Mughal road started during his tenure which is going to be completed soon and it will add another feather in his cap.
During the tenure of Mufti Sayeed, Much publicized election to civic bodies were held after a gap of more than three decades thereby bringing democracy to grassroots level.
Large scale developmental works in Poonch district were started and completed during his tenure. The biggest respite, he gave to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, some relief from corrupt activities and many corrupt officials were prematurely retired. The common man still feels the good governance of those days. Even Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee showered his praise in favour of Mufti Sayeed as he said once, "Mufti Sayeed has provided good governance to the people of Jammu and Kashmir and delivered justice to all the three regions of the State"
Now the present Govt claims to have started much programs like SKEWPY for unemployed youths, but it is turning out to be a big joke as large number of loop holes are clearly visible..
Recently announced New Recruitment Policy is clearly a murder of the democratic rights of an unemployed youth. Corruption is going on at rapid speed.
Large number of scams in NHRM, NREGA and JKCA are coming out and slowly and steadily people of Poonch are losing faith in this Govt as "Trust Deficit" among Poonchites is clearly visible on the grounds.
As it is again Abdullahs, who are at the helm, so injustice with the common people and lack of developmental activities would be a routine phenomenon ahead. |
