BSNL authorities awaiting Centre's clearance to start video calling | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT srinagar, Apr 22: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) authorities in the Kashmir valley still awaits clearance from Union Ministry of Home Affairs (UMHA) to start video calling and Short Message Service (SMS). However, all other private mobile service companies operating in the valley have already started video calling service to their customers. Hundreds of BSNL mobile service customers have switched over to private mobile service companies to avail this facility while many have services from BSNL and any of these companies. According to BSNL officials here, all the equipment for starting the video calling service have already been installed. After receiving clearance from the UMHA it will take us minimum time to start the service in the valley, they said. They said the department cannot start the service without clearance from the UMHA because of security reasons and situation on the borders. It was because of this reason SMS facility to pre-paid mobile phones had been withdrawn, they said, adding that the department has been providing this facility to post-paid mobile users in the Kashmir valley. However, the department is providing SMS service to our post-paid users also before it was withdrawn on the instructions from the government. The BSNL officials said all equipment for starting video calling service has been installed long ago and are ready to provide the service as and when green signal is received from the government. However, the 3G customers can use it for internet surfing. About ban on SMS facility to prepaid mobile users, they said this too will continue till the government lifts the ban. However, postpaid mobile users are enjoying this service, he said. But other mobile companies have also withdrawn SMS facility to their customers. The officials said customers, who have landline can get free SIM from the department under 'Peyari jodi' and avail 30 minute free talk time daily from mobile to particular landline which is a very popular among the customers. However, the facility of depositing ten months advance rent to get two extra months free has been withdrawn from January 1, this year. "We have received a number of representations from the customers and we are now going to take it up with higher authorities," they said. |
