EARLY TIMES REPORT
jammu, Apr 22: If the latest reports with the security agencies are any guide the number of militants, operating within Jammu and Kashmir, has swelled to over 500 during the last over one month. Official sources said that a month ago the Director General of police, Kul-deep Khoda, had stated that there were less than 200 militants, including those belonging to the dreaded Lashkar-i-Toi-ba and Hizbul Mujahi-deen outfits, present in Jammu and Kashmir. But during the last over one month their number is said to have increased to about 500. Sources said that though the militancy related violence and activities had declined by 50 per cent when compared to the number of incidents last year. According to these sources, in 2010-11 the number of militancy related incidents had gone by 47 per cent when compared to the number of incidents in 2009-2010. Police functionaries say that as a result of coordinated efforts by the police and other security forces a large number of militants had been accoun-ted for, some were eliminated and others were arrested during the last three years. They said following the killing of over 12 field commanders of Hizbul Muj-ahi deen and Lashkar -i-Toiba during the last one y ear incidents of subversive violence had declined.
However, during the last three months or so militants were trying to regroup and carve out new hideouts forgiving new dimensions to the ongoing "Jehad." Despite the upgrading and strengthening of the counter infiltration measures on the LOC and the IB in Jammu and Kashmir groups of militants were trying to sneak into the state. Official reports said that during the last over three months troops guarding the LOC foiled as many as 12 ingress bids. Police sources claim that despite strict vigil on the LOC some militants have managed to cross into Jammu and Kashmir and that has been the reason for a number of incidents including the killing of one Assistant Sub inspector of Police in Srinagar. They said that even after the demolition of 40 CRPF bunkers in Srinagar city police posts have been set up as part of the plan of upgrading the security grid.
They said that even the Army authorities have been informed about the plan of militants to fortify their hideouts and to intensify their activities. Attacking the security forces, including the police, with guns and grenades is part of their new plan which needed a major counter offensive by the security forces.
