Samba, Apr 22: Celebrating the Earth Day, the J&K Paryavaran Sanstha NGO expressed its concern about the ecological degradation of the Shivaliks in Himalayas resulting in water shortage and called for 'Save Shivaliks to save the Earth.' "Most of the rivers of the Shivaliks including Tawi, Ujh and Basantar are drying up, it is time the Govt, NGO's and the people think of saving the Shivaliks, the representatives of NGO said in a function organized to mark Earth Day. "Besides 537 ponds, two fresh water lakes, Mansar and Sruinsar, are depleting due to the degradation of the environment, speakers said and further pointed out that water levels in the dug wells too have gone down dangerously low. "On the Earth Day to Save the Earth let us pledge to Save the Shivaliks. Only then we will be able to save Jammu and our people, their heritage and culture and then we will be the part of the bigger campaign to save Earth.
