Minister forgets `Sports Day' promise

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Apr 22: Even as five months have past when the first date for Sher-e-Kashmir Awards for excellence in sports was fixed for December five, yet the Sports Ministry has not been able to come out with any fresh plan to honour already selected list of 34 outstanding sportspersons and sports administrators of the state.
The promise to revive the Sher-e-Kashmir Awards, after near two decades, was made by the Minister for Sports, R S Chib on `Sports Day', celebrated at K K Hakhu Stadium with much fanfare on August 29 last.
All the preparations were made for December five function, which was to be held at General Zorawar Singh auditorium, University of Jammu on the Birth Anniversary of Sher-e-Kashmir, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah.
But, at the eleventh hour, the chief guest of the function, Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah expressed his inability to attend the function due to certain engagements and the award ceremony was postponed indefinitely.
Now, the citations, mementos and specially designed blazers as also other dress material gain dust in the stores of autonomous sports body of J&K State Sports Council. Funds worth lakhs of Rupees, otherwise meant for promotion of sports at the grass root level, have been spent on purchase of material for felicitation function.
"Just four months have left for next `Sports Day', celebrated throughout the country on birth anniversary of hockey legend, Major Dhayan Chand. God knows, what will be the next promise from the Minister for Sports," said a senior gymnastics player expressing his concern over the neglect of sports in the state.
Meanwhile, it has been reliably learnt that the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah is unhappy with the list of player selected for the prestigious state award by a committee, constituted by the Sports Minister, R S Chib. So, he looks least interested in giving away the awards.
