| PDP demands free electricity for residents of erstwhile Doda district | | | Early Times Report
Chatroo (Kishtwar), Apr 23: Expressing concern over non availability of basic amenities to the residents of district Kishtwar, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) demanded that besides giving employment to the locals, free electricity should also be given to the people of erstwhile Doda district because they have first right on the water flowing from their area.
Addressing a public meeting at Chatroo PDP leader Sartaj Madni pointed out the mega hydro electricity projects are being constructed in this belt but the locals are not getting benefits of such projects. He especially mentioned towards acute shortage of water and electricity being faced by the inhabitants of this belt.
"It is unfortunate that other parts of the country are benefited from the power generated by the projects located in this belt but the natives of this place are struggling to get power, even for a couple of hours throughout the day", he mentioned and regretted that local residents are neither getting power nor other basic amenities. Madni said that it was result of the discriminatory water agreement signed by the successive National Conference regimes that local are not getting any benefit of the mega hydro electric projects located in this belt.
Speaking on the occasion, general secretary of PDP Thakur Balbir Singh said that agencies engaged in constructing as well as managing these mega hydro projects are duty bound to start local area development programme for the upliftment and development of this backward belt. "It is unfortunate that local area development programmes are yet to be started by these agencies in this belt which deserve fair deal from such agencies", he said and warned that PDP would not remain a mute spectator to the misery of the people. Party leader and MLC Sayeed Asgar Ali while pointing towards poor road connectivity, demanded expediting of the work on Singthantop-Kishtwar road and completion of Vailoo tunnel at the earliest.
He said that completion of Singthantop-Kishtwar road would open new avenues for this backward and neglected belt of the state. He said that due to poor road connectivity, accidents have become a routine affair. Abdul Majid, Azhar Malik, Rehman Kashmiri, Talib Hussain, Varinder Sharma, Qasim Din, Puran Chand, Abdul Kabir Tappal, A R Magray, Sheikh Latif, G M Rahi and others also addressed the meeting. |
