K leaders focusing on Indo-Pak relations instead of serving people | Cause Of Concern | | RUSTAM JAMMU, Apr 23: People of J&K vote every six years to elect Government of their choice. They participate in the democratic exercise hoping their representatives in the Assembly would discuss the public-related issues and enact laws aimed at catering to their socio-economic needs and mitigating the hardships they face at the hands of the essentially insensitive civil and police administration. Unfortunately, however, all or nearly all the Kashmiri leaders who are in the Government or outside have been, instead of focusing their attention on the public-related issues or on the problems people have been facing at the hands of the administration, including corrupt elements, have been devoting most of their time to issues which concern India-Pakistan relations, Indian sovereignty and the country's territorial integrity. There is hardly any Kashmiri leader who does not talk of accession, Kashmir issue, autonomy, peace process between India and Pakistan, the so-called confidence building measures, demilitarization, Army, AFSPA, PSA, South Asia, Central Asia, measures which could ease travel restrictions on those desirous of visiting POJK and the vice-versa, alienation, easy visa regime and so on. They speak on these issues almost everyday. I am not referring to the likes of Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Yasin Malik, Shabir Ahmad Shah, to mention only a few, because they have nothing to do with the problems the people have been facing. They are simply running and maintaining money-minting shops exploiting the weaknesses of the chicken-hearted and irresponsible State Government and the Central Government. They are the true Pakistani agents operating in Kashmir and enjoying worldly life at the cost of the gullible Kashmiri Muslims. The fact of the matter is that they are thriving on the blood of the people. It would be too much to say that they would see reason and start working for the amelioration of the socio-economic lot of the people of Kashmir. They will not. I am only referring to what the so-called mainstream leaders, including those belonging to the NC, the Congress and the CPI-M, say on daily basis to arouse popular passions, hide their failures and remain in limelight. They are the real culprits because they contest election in the name of people but forget them the moment they win or lose the election. They are the real sinners because they take oath to defend the Constitution and serve the nation and the people they represent in the Assembly but brazenly violate the constitution or go beyond the confines of the State constitution and Indian Constitution with impunity to divert the people's attention away from the real issues. They enjoy the loaves and fishes of office, use the tax-payers' money to make their life very comfortable, live under foolproof security cover, create difficulties for the nation in the State by indulging in politics of emotional blackmail and deceit and leave people to the care of God or anarchy. Mercifully, the Central Government watches the anti-people and anti-State activities of the Kashmiri leaders as a mute spectator, thus adding more to the difficulties of the already rather suffering people. The real cause of concern is the indifferent attitude of the Central Government and the highly questionable conduct of the "mainstream" Kashmiri leadership. The people of the State would continue to suffer as long as we have in the State and New Delhi the kind of leadership we have today. The worst part of the whole situation is the failure of the national parties like the Congress and the BJP to join hands against those in Kashmir who have been violating the people's mandate and doing things not permitted by the Constitution. The Jammu-based leadership is no less guilty. For, it has, like the Congress and the BJP, also failed to discharge their obligations towards the State and the nation by taking on the rabble-rousers in Kashmir. |
