JPPF Demands rollback of water, power tariff | | | early times report JAMMU, Apr 23: Lashing out at the Omar Abdullah government for its failure to check theft of power supply, Jammu Province Peoples Forum today demanded roll-back of power and water tariff hike in the state. "We demand roll-back in the hike of power and water tariff in the state by the government," JPPF President Pavitar Singh told reporters here. The government is installing meters for water consumption, but it has miserably failed to check theft of electricity leading to suffering people Singh said. The present hike could have been easily avoided if the government had succeeded in checking power pilferage, he said. "Power cuts from 8 to 12 hours daily and erratic water supply has made life difficult in the city. Water supply in certain localities remains suspended for days together and no relief is given to the departments," he said. Singh criticised the "adamant" attitude of the coalition government, which was opposing the public's demand to roll back recently imposed "exorbitant" and "unprecedented" hike in water tax and electricity charges. Instead of improving electricity and water supply, the government is further hiking taxes which is sheer injustice with the helpless public, he said. He also opposed the proposed imposition of further taxes like those on properties.Singh said the government's policy to eradicate poverty was, in reality, only crushing the poor (aam aadmi) as the commoner is confronted with inflation and sky high prices of essential commodities.
