Work on all tourist villages to be taken up this year: Dilawar
117 water supply schemes completed, 300 expected this year

Minister for PHE, Irrigation, Flood control and Tourism Mr. Dilawar Mir informed Legislative Assembly today that all tourist villages identified under Prime Minister’s Reconstruction Plan would be taken up for execution this year. He said the department would undertake a survey of all areas of state to explore the possibility of identifying new tourist spots.
He said conducive atmosphere for tourism development is imperative and fortunately peaceful environment is gaining ground and large scale infrastructure development of tourism is under implementation and he forecast huge tourist flow during the coming years.
Winding up the discussion on demand of grants for his departments, Mr. Mir said that the state of Jammu and Kashmir is blessed with places of scenic charm, there remains tremendous scope to develop the tourism industry. He said that in this regard virgin places are being developed with the assistance of funds provided by centre.
On the performance of PHE department, the Minister said about 6667 habitations in the state are fully covered and efforts are on to cover the remaining ones so that government’s commitment to provide drinking water to all the people is fulfilled for which he said an amount of Rs.2036 crores is needed. He said during the year 2005-06, 117 water supply schemes were completed in the state and during the current year the government plans to complete 300 schemes covering 1197 habitations.
The Minister said 26 major and medium irrigation schemes are under execution in the state at an estimated cost of Rs.1263.66 crore. He said two schemes of Sonaman and Marwal have been completed during 2005-06 and during the current year the government plans to complete Kathua, Lethpur, Zaingeer and Igofi irrigation schemes. He said the long pending issue of construction of Shahpur Kandi Barrage has been settled with Punjab government and work on Barrage has been started. With its completion, he said, Ravi Tawi canal will run to its full potential which is presently running 1/3 of its actual potential.
On the performance of Flood Control department Mr. Mir said during 2005-06 Rs.20.50 crore have been spent under the sector for protection works and for the year 2006-07 the outlay has been fixed at Rs.19.50 crore. He said projects like anti-erosion works on Jhelum at an estimated cost of Rs.25 crore and anti-erosion works on Tawi and Chenab rivers at an estimated cost of Rs.52 crore have been approved by the central government. Earlier, Mr. Mir moved Demand No. 20 for Rs.13333.54 lakhs, Demand No. 22 for Rs.46878.89 lakhs and Demand No. 23 for Rs.53896.35 lakhs asking approval of the House to grand the above said amounts to defray the charges which will come in course of payment during the year ending 31st March, 2008 in respect of the departments under his ministry.
