"Illegal" mining may cause irreversible damage to ancient Abhinav Gupt caves in Kashmir | | | early times report JAMMU, Apr 24: The rampant "illegal" mining activities going on in Berwah village of Budgam, Kashmir, has the potential to cause irreversible damage to the 1,000-year-old Abhinav Gupt caves. The ancient caves, two in number, have a great religious significance for the Hindus as it has its connection to Abhinav Gupt, a great scholar, philospher and devout worshipper of Lord Shiva. He had spent years in meditation in these caves. As per history, he was last seen in these caves with his 1,200 disciples in 1020 AD. After that, they were not seen by anybody. It is said that they had left for their last journey through these caves. It is said that Kashmiri Pandits had been visiting the caves on the eve of Purnima in June every year up to 1947 to perform pooja and religious rituals. Abhinav was also a teacher in the Kashmiri Pandits' old "Shaivmat" school. It is also said that the ancient name of Berwah, where these caves are, was Bhairav -- rudra avtaar of Lord Shiva. The illegal mining in east and north of these caves has put their existance in danger. The entry to the caves is from eastern side, while the exit is from the northern side. The illegal mining from both sides could also result in cave-ins, further damaging the caves. While the government was still to come forward with a statement on the issue, Kashmiri Pandits have decided to fight for the protection of these ancient caves. A group of Kashmiri Pandits also visited the site under the leadership of Veer Saraf and expressed great resentment over the rampant digging which was continuing in the area. Even if the mining was being carried out authorisedly, they would not allow it, KPs said. "It can be another attempt of the government to destroy their history from Kashmir," they felt. |
