Early Times Report

JAMMU, Apr 25: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has taken strong exception to glaring shortfalls in the electoral rolls being prepared and published for the upcoming urban local body polls.
A delegation led by Rangil Singh, with Ved Mahajan, Daman Bhasin, Falail Singh, Capt. Anil Gour and Chaman Lal Angral met the Commissioner and Joint Commissioner Jammu Municipal Corporation today to apprise them of glaring discrepancies in the electoral rolls of wards in Jammu municipality and press upon them to have the electoral rolls prepared in a manner which leads to maximum number of people casting their votes without any hassles and thus fulfill constitutional provisions of the state and country.
The delegation brought out the fact that over the years the population and area of Jammu Municipality has grown to a very large extent necessitating need for increase in the total number of wards from the existing 71 alongwith a rotation of the reserved wards. The house numbers allotted by the Housing Boards / JDA / Housing colonies are missing in the Electoral Rolls but instead Jammu Municipality has allotted new numbers arbitrarily which has led to a total confusion amongst the voters.
This numbering is not only causing total confusion in locating the voters in the list but would also waste a lot of time in locating the name of the voter thus leading to a huge rush being accumulated at the voting booths. Both the officers failed to convince the delegation as to the reasons why no increase in total number of wards was done and shifted the onus of this exercise on the Deputy Commissioners office.
The delegation decided to take up this matter with the Chief Electoral Officer immediately so that the necessary instructions are issued to the concerned departments to incorporate the above much needed corrections in the electoral rolls.
