Aircel land oustee, Security guards observe strike | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 25 : The Jammu and Kashmir Aircel Land Oustee and Security Guards Workers (ALOSGW) today went on one-day strike in the Kashmir valley in support of their demands and against the alleged police action on their union president Khurshid Ahmad Burza. Meanwhile, the Communist Party of India (M) state secretary Mohammad Yousuf Targami has strongly condemned the police action against Burza, calling it undemocratic. He said the workers of ALOSGW had gone on one-day strike today to press to management to fulfill their genuine demands. In a statement here today Targami, who is also CITU President said that police reportedly dragged Burza out of his residence yesterday and beat him up following shutdown call by the union to press management to fulfill genuine demands of sec urity guards manning their towers across Kashmir valley. This uncalled for action of police has compelled the workers to go on strike today, he said. Calling for avoiding such tactics, the trade union leader said that this approach of the police will not help to bring any improvement in the law and order situation, rather it will encourage further deterioration. 'In fact, such tactics will dent credibility of the entire police organisation and spur public disillusionment', he observed. 'Peaceful demonstration is a constitutional right which can not be suppressed by highhandedness', he said and added that administration by such measures is falling a tool in the hands of vested interests. Strongly opposing outside vendors, the legislator noted with concern the hardships faced by the guards of Jammu and Kashmir on account of delayed release of wages mainly due to apathetic and whimsical attitude of outside vendors like Safehands and Ranker. What is wrong if Jammu based vendor B D Security is made sole vendor in the entire state, he opined. Tarigami demanded appointment of one more guard for every mobile tower to reduce the workload on the existing guards, saying putting these guards on 12- hours' duty a day throughout the week constitutes violation of Labour laws. Demanding enhancement in the wages of the guards, he said it was unfortunate that the company which earns in millions monthly is depriving its own employees from their rightful and dignified working conditions. He also called for granting medical allowance and casual leaves as admissible under rules to these employees. He further urged upon the administration to facilitate the negotiated settlement of the workers genuine demands and immediate release of their leader. |
