BJP to Protest Harassment of SPOs | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 25: Lashing out at the state government for alleged harassment and demoralisation of Special Police Officials and Village Defence Committees, the BJP today said it will hold district-wise protest Dharnas against the "indifferent attitude" of the Government towards the VDCs and SPOs in this hilly region. "SPOs and VDCs who are fighting terrorism bravely and have provided protection to politicians and people, are being harassed and discouraged by the local administration and government", alleged state BJP vice president and former MLA Bali Bhagat. He claimed that they were deliberately demoralised on one or other pretext and SPOs and VDC members were often summoned and harassed in their respective police stations without any reason or on the fictitious complaints of anti- social elements. The BJP has decided to organise protest Dharnas in Doda, Ramban, Kishtwar, Udhampur and Reasi district on May 18 in protest against the "indifferent attitude" of Congress-NC government towards the VDCs and SPOs, he said. Some SPOs who have done a commendable job in fighting militancy in Doda district have been arrested long back and jailed due to nexus and conspiracy of some police officers and anti-social elements, he alleged. Bali Bhagat claimed that out of 4068 VDC groups functioning in Jammu province only 2191 groups were paid honorarium with the rest 1877 VDCs deliberately ignored on political and communal grounds by the successive past and present governments in the state. He appealed the centre and state Govt for sanctioning remuneration for all left out VDC groups by adopting uniformity in the state. Leaders also show their serious concern over the termination, arrest and harassment of SPO,s in Ram Nagar area of Udhampur district. Addressing party leaders at a meeting, former state president Dr Nirmal Singh lauded the role of VDCs and SPOs and said that both groups are the basic important organs for fighting international terrorism in close co-ordination with para military, police and other security forces in the state. Singh said that threat of cross border terrorism, Maoists, naxalites and other terrorist organisations active in the country are hell bent to weaken and disintegrate the Indian union. Hundreds of security forces jawans laid down their lives while fighting anti national elements and for guarding the borders in the country, he said. The BJP leader suggested that a special force be raised to curb terrorism in J-K on the pattern of Ladakh Scouts or Territorial Army by recruiting all the young VDC members in the state. |
