Omar joins Kamaal's campaign, asks Soz not to open his mouth | Message From Kalakot | | Neha JAMMU, Apr 25: Not content with the anti-Congress no-holds-barred propaganda blitz unleashed by additional general secretary of NC Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal, his nephew and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah yesterday also took the plunge and attacked JKPCC president Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz from right and left. Talking to media persons at Kalakot, where he also addressed a public meeting, organized by the local NC leaders, Omar Abdullah, among other things, reportedly said: "Repeated public utterances by the Congress leadership in the State 'may create problems in the functioning of the coalition.' They (Congress leaders) should not indulge in mud-slinging; they should raise issues 'at proper platform.' "He (Soz) should discuss these issues in Coordination Committee and not make such statements in public. We have asked our leaders and workers to avoid public confrontations. But the way the Congress leaders are publicly speaking against the Government, we may not be able to 'control' our leaders. This practice will be against the interest of the Government as it 'may create problems in the functioning of the coalition' Government". The message for the Congress leaders, including the JKPCC president, was loud and clear. The message was that they must keep their mouth shut failing which the NC leaders and workers would show them their rightful place. Another message from Kalakot was that the Congress party and the Congress leaders have no say in the governance of the State. What made Omar Abdullah to teach the Congress leaders a lesson and target and attack them was the JKPCC president's pious suggestion that the elected Panchayats needed to be empowered by adopting and implementing the 73rd and 74th constitutional amendments in letter and spirit. Soz had at Rajouri three days ago urged the elected Panchs and Sarpanchs to start a campaign against the Government to force it to adopt these two landmark amendments and assured them his fullest possible support. Soz had also candidly said that it was the NC that was creating "hurdles" in the empowerment of Panchayats. It was perhaps the Chief Minister's first full-scale attack on Soz this year. Earlier in October-November 2011, Omar Abdullah had taken on Soz umpteen times and the issue that had brought him and the JKPCC president face to face with each other was the Chief's Minister's October unilateral announcement in Srinagar that he would revoke the AFSPA before the Durbar reopened in the State's winter capital. Soz had criticized Omar for not taking the Congress party on board and had said that the AFSPA should not be amended or revoked without taking into consideration the concerns as expressed by the Army charged with the responsibility of combating terrorism and separatism. Omar had countered Soz saying he had taken on board the Union Home Minister and others in New Delhi, thus telling the JKPCC chief that he didn't consider it necessary to discuss any issue with Soz. Omar took this extreme view overlooking the fact that Soz was chairman of the Congress-NC Coordination Committee. The Chief Minister's latest attack on the Congress leadership once again establishes that there is no love lost between the NC and the JKPCC. It would be better if the Congress severs all ties with the NC. This coalition of disparate outfits is neither in the interest of public nor in the interest of the State, which is militant and separatist-infested. |
