It is from sublime to ridicule story | | | It will be insult to him if people blame Kashmir Mirwaiz and chairman All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC), Molvi Umar Farooq, for descending from the sublime to the ridicule when he emphasised the need for promoting Kashmiri language. While presiding over a school function the Mirwaiz urged educational institutions to initiate measures that could promote Kashmiri language so that students could speak, understand the language. He said that it was ufortunate that parents in the valley encouraged their wards in speaking in English and Urdu thereby ignoring their mother tongue. Whatever Molvi Umar stated at the function seemed to have amazed listners who were present in the function and equally astonished political observers who never expected the Mirwaiz to issue sermons on the need for promoting Kashmiri language. Such a sermon given by the Minister for education or by Commissioner Education would have not created any surprise. It is so because during the last about 22 years the young separatist leaders has been dilating on various political issues and political aspect behind the Kashmir issue. He has been heard fulminating against the mainstream political leaders in India for not having implemented the UN resolution on Kashmir. The Mirwaiz would invariably fulminate against those security personnel who were responsible, rightly or wrongly, for human rights violations.During the last two decades the Kashmir Mirwaiz has been invited by the OIC and he has,on many occasions, fulminated against India's policy on Kashmir. In December last year the Hurriyat chairman's mindset experienced major transformation when he dilated on the problems people in Kashmir fac because of acute shortage of electricity, drinking water and non availability of essential items at reasonable rates. He had berated the state Government for its failure in providing these basic facilities to the people of the state. And rightly Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, and a section of the media had lauded Molvi Umar for focussing his attention on peoples' problems and difficulties. And when the Hurriyat chairman talked about poand drinking water crisis observers in Kashmir had opined that after the separatists sermons on settlement of the Kashmir issue and on human rights violations had stopped to be of sogreat interest to people Molvi Umar Farooq may have thought of touching those topics and problems that continue to haunt people of the state. Some observers termed it as Hurriyat chairman's exercise on wooing people to his side. Those people who had grown disillusioned with the gun culture and with the separatists' ideology needed to be hooked by the Kashmir Mirwaiz for widening his support base. So far so good. But when the Maulana talks about promotion of Kashmiri language one feels a bit bewildered. Those who feel so believe that the Maulana may have run short of ideas and slogans and hence he has opted for raising an issue that may find support from a small section of people, especially poets, novelists, short story writers and teachers who teach the Kashmiri language and literature in educational instit utions.Whatever omay say about the Maulana one cannot but appreciate the transformation in him.If this transformation is permanent it will have major impact on the political scenario in the state. If it is not it is simply the outcome of dearth of ideas in the mind of the Maulana. |
