Will MLA East come to Tawi's rescue, save it from further deterioration? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 26: The Tawi river, which flows through the City of Temples, is indeed in a very pathetic condition. While for some, it serves as a septic tank, for others, it is a place to dump urban waste. It is also known by the name of Suryaputri (daughter of Sun). Its sacredness and religious importance notwithstanding, the sewage and human waste directly flows into it at many places in the city, right from Panjtirthi to Raipur-Satwari. It would not be wrong to say that the river's city stretch is virtually turned into a nullah, carrying filth. Jammuites, however, seem to be unconcerned about it and not in a mood to take remedial measures on their own. But doesn't it has any affect on BJP MLA (east) Ashok Khajuria? Or doesn't he feel that it is his moral responsibility to get the sewage entry points into the river plugged and allot funds to clean it? The river passes through the Jammu East Assembly segment and covers most of it. Sewage and human waste enters Tawi from several points in the constituency. The drain water, carrying all sorts of filth, enters it directly from Pucci Dhakki and other city areas. Angrez Singh, a resident of Circular Road, said the MLA ought to initiate steps to save the Suryaputri from further deterioration. First, he should take up the matter with the authorities concerned to plug the points from where the filth enters the river, and second, he should allot funds to clean it. The MLA could also take up the matter with the Government to get more funds needed for the purpose, he added, saying "the river also adds to the beauty of the city and is an attraction for tourists and pilgrims who come here from different parts of the country". Khajuria was not available for comments. |
