AWSC discusses problems of pensioners, senior citizens | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Apr 27: Association for Welfare of Senior Citizens held an emergency meeting under the chairmanship of Vikram Gour President AWSC to discuss the problems of Pensioners/senior citizens, who have to undergo extreme hardship for getting genuineness of their pension papers/cases verified under a recent Government order under which all pensioners irrespective of their age, health status and other old age related problems have been directed 'en mass' to appear before their respective original treasury offices (where the original pension papers were prepared) for their personal verification irrespective of the fact where you are presently drawing your pension. The members who tried to get the verification certificate from the treasuries expressed their harrowing experience of standing in long queues for hours, for the whole day (thirsty and hungry) without getting the job done. The whole exercise is unwarranted, cumbersome, humiliating and inhuman for senior citizens at this stage of their lives when the government has chosen this extremely cumbersome method to ascertain whether the pensioner is alive or dead and are 'eligible' for pension. Instead of issuing orders for identification parade like hardened criminals before treasury officers this could be verified by the bank or treasury from where the pensioners is drawing his/her pension presently. There are pensioners who are bed-ridden, crippled, cannot move about or are bed ridden due to certain ailments. There are others who are plus 80-90 both male and female pensioners who at this ripe age are staying with their kith and kin outside state and are not in position even to move leave aside their covering long distances. |
