Jammu Riders lifts JPL T20 Tawi Cup | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 27: Star-studded side of Jammu Riders trounced equally good Jammu Janbaz by 13 runs to bag the maiden title of Jammu Premier League (JPL) T20 Tawi Cup the final of which played at MA Stadium, here today. Earlier, Jammu Riders skipper Dhruv Mahajan won the toss and elected to bat first they set a target of 145 runs, which, in reply, Jammu Janbaz could not chase and exhausted their quota of overs for 131 runs with two wickets in hand. Openers Hilal Rather and Anshuman Sharma made a great start making it 46 in five overs on the scoreboard. It was followed by another good partnership between Dhruv Mahajan Hardeep Singh which helped the side bring the total to 144. Hardeep remained top scorer with unbeaten 52 runs, while Anshuman Sharma contributed quick-fire 31 runs with the help of five boundaries and a six. Dhruv also contributed 31 runs. From Jammu Janbaz, Mayank Gautam was most successful bowler with three wickets four 24 runs while Deepak Singh Manhas bagged two and Nitin Mehra claimed one. In reply, Jammu Janbaz could make 131 runs losing eight wickets to lose the all important game by 13 runs. Manish Dogra was top scorer with 41 runs while Ashu Kumar and Gokul Baru contributed 25 and 20 runs respectively. Sameer Khajuria was the wrecker-in-chief for Jammu Riders, who scalped four important wickets in his four overs giving away 21 runs, while speedster Ram Dayal captured two wickets. Manik Gupta and Dhruv Mahajan shared apiece each. Later, Sameer Khajuria was adjudged man of the match for his superb bowling show, while left-handed opener batsman Manish Dogra was declared man of the series for scoring 323 runs in the tournament including three half-centuries. The winner Jammu Riders team was awarded a cash prize of Rs five lakh while runners-up team got Rs three lakh from chief guest, Minister for Sports, R S Chib. Man of the series and man of the match awards were also presented cheque worth Rs one lakh each. The second phase of the tournament had 16 top teams drawn from 123 participating units in the preliminary round. This tournament was organized by Indian Army under Operation Sadhbhavana in collaboration with the Department of Youth Services and Sports. Speaking on the occasion, Chib said that sports and games shape careers of youth thus playing a pivotal force in building a healthy society. He said that the tournaments like KPL and now JPL serve as a launching pad for the cricketers in general and the players from rural areas in particular to hone their talent and skill at the higher levels. The sports minister declared that JPL as also the KPL will be the regular features and will also be followed by a cricketing extravaganza namely Jammu Kashmir Premier League (JKPL). Earlier, in his address, Lieutenant General of 16 Corp, A S Nandal welcomed the chief guest, other dignitaries and the participating teams and thanked them for their endeavour in making this tournament a grand success. He further said that the tournaments like JPL will serve the state in exploring the talent from grass-root level.
