Promotion of education at the cost of quality is a fruitless drive | | KHUSHWANT S RANIAL | 4/28/2012 10:54:00 PM |
| In a bid to make education accessible to every individual and citizen of this nation, lot of efforts have been made and still with every passing day, newer and newer strategies and policies are being conceived and evolved to inject enthusiasm for attaining success to the highest level. But sadly to share, despite laudable efforts made so far, results have not been able to churn out the intellectuals of a class worth to command respect at the international forum. In fact it has been admitted by none other than the seasoned leader ,politician and Parliamentarian Sh. Jairam while delivering a lecture recently during a convention in New Delhi. He opined that we have not able to produce intelligentsia strength which could emulate the intellectuals globally serving in different capacities at different forums in different spheres of the life. Is such a statement not a shocking revelation from a parliamentarian dealing with the educational sector ? Undoubtedly ,it is solely because unlike past ,we have raised our expenditure in the education sector in the recent decades much more than we used to part with earlier, and that too at the expense of other sectors demanding immediate aid and relief to overcome the discrepancies. The analysis of the issue finds its roots at the bottom . As per the nature's law,The tree cannot hold soil if its roots are not stronger. Soil erosion is bound to take place in those regions where there are employed improper cultivation measures. Likewise in educational sphere if the base of our younger generation is not strongly built up, then there is every chance of structural collapse and debacle sooner or later stage of the life .The biggest irony is that our educational planners bank more on the foreign educational set up ill realising the domestic level creative outlook of the receiepents, means and modes of educational facilities, available infrastructure, methodology of teaching, availability of gadgets and learning tools, skills ,space of accommodation, institutional planning, motivational level etc. So when things of the foreign soil are thrust upon, even may be on the experimental basis, mental pressure is bound to take place leading to the total mental block of the young siblings. One can afford the infrastructure but not the mental ability and strong will to initiate vigorously. Brains cannot be produced but their skills can be honed and sharpened. And this can be acquired through personal indulgence, innate urge, better initiative, corrupt free serene atmosphere, unchecked inhibitions, and frequent attempts to multiply efforts and above clear cut set targets bereft of blurred vision. At this stage if we go by the syllabi being taught to the newer crop at the Pre -Nursery ,Nursery level ,one finds quite distorting and hazy picture .The present supply is far from the reality and does not match Indian social milieu .When we shall remain alien to our own culture and civilisation ,then how it is possible that we will be able to cope up with the international standards and parameters. The syllabi differs from place to place ,areas to areas and regions to regions. With the result when a child, shuttles from one institution to another institution under some unavoidable circumstances, he/she find finds in complete state of disarray .Thus owing to non -homogeneity of the syllabi structure, an un necessary pressure is built up and seen raised on an average child with the result that at very beginning of one's career, child's attention gets distracted badly forcing one to lose interest in studies voluntarily. Parents ill- realising the factor behind such distraction then starts emphasising on cramming which is an involuntarily means of learning. Learning by force and not from the core of heart is short lived and temporary .It vaporises at faster rate than earned through one's complete involvement and total commitment. Rote memory slowly and steadily becomes a part of the young one. Concepts do not creep deeply in the minds of young learner as a result of which such an exercise becomes slowly and steadily part of one's life. The inner urge to go for an experiment dies and an unhealthy society completely lack of sound knowledge with weak exposure emerges. Same is the case with the higher education i.e at Primary, Secondary, Senior-secondary, College and at the University level . To add to the woe, our teaching fraternity is equally responsible for such dismal performance. The amount of dedication required to obtain healthy outcome is lacking and have been found wanting as well. Teachers blames planners responsible for this existing mess by holding this point that problem lies with them .In fact the need of the hour is that the whole educational syllabus must be drafted in the light of the local needs and scenario and above all the intelligence standards of the natives of the areas. Further too much stress must not be laid on the overflowing curriculum .It should be based more on personal activities and less on the theoretical cover up. Overburdening must be reduced. Too much assignments and monthly examination system must be dispensed with .It is adding like fuel to the fire .The idea of shedding load has started taking the toll on the part of educand and educator. Educator workload has multiplied many times because he remains entirely engrossed in maintaining the records of the wards studying under his fold. Whereas simultaneously educand cannot have sigh of relief from the thrust of uninterrupted terminal examinations .Since already due to outnumbered problems in majority of the schools ,pupil - teacher ratio concept is still elusive, as a result of which students fail to get due attention of the teachers and teachers rightly fail to deliver despite possessing rich amount of potential . A sort of gap is created amounting to indiscipline and chaos in the class and every one irrespective of the class and hierarchal structure , Just remain busy in passing time. Under such circumstance is it prudent to promote education sidelining or ignoring the quality. We do not need numbers of educated class but what is more urgently desired is the qualitative stuff that could shape the destiny of this nation. Let we stress for the remarkable changes to meet the basic needs and not focus our attention on borrowing foreign culture in our education system to cause a mixture without yielding profitable dividends. The sooner the initiative is taken, far reaching profits we shall bear. Otherwise the present exercise would be a sheer wasteful drive. |
