Separatists plan to establish foothold in Jammu
Defeating Sinister Game-plan

JAMMU, Apr 28: Convinced that the ongoing separatist movement in certain parts of Kashmir valley has not helped them enlist the support of the international community and that an impression has gained ground that their movement is also sectarian, separatists like Syeed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik have planned to extend their area of influence to Jammu and Ladakh. Their objective is, it seems, to tell the international community and world bodies like the United Nations (UN) and the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) that their "freedom struggle" is "secular" and that the non-Muslims are very much part of it. They would start the process of mass mobilization in Jammu and Ladakh by holding public meetings both in the Muslim-dominated and Hindu-dominated areas.
If reports emanating from Kashmir are any indication, pro-Pakistan and hardcore extremist Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who heads Tehrik-e-Hurriyat (TeH), has asked his supporters in the Muslim-majority areas of Jammu province to start mass mobilization campaign and ensure the participation of the non-Muslims in public meetings. On the other hand, All-Party Hurriyat Conference - Mirwaiz (APHC-M) chairman Mirwaiz Farooq has in consultation with his colleagues like Shabir Ahmad Shah and Bilal Gani Lone reportedly decided to hold meetings in the areas where the Muslims are in minority. The areas which they have reportedly identified include RS Pura, Samba and Kathua. Significantly, a few days ago, Geelani and Mirwaiz had, according to media reports, directed their workers to raise those issues during public meetings which directly concern common people or which concern their day-to-day needs.
Not only this, they had also told their workers that they must see to it that they do not say anything while speaking on the "Kashmir problem" and its solution that "makes the non-Muslims feel ignored" and that they should also see to it that the "local leaders" of Jammu, particularly "non-Muslim leaders", are given more and more opportunities to speak from their platform.
Several factors have made the Kashmiri separatists adopt a new strategy to remain relevant in the prevailing political scenario. One of the factors is the insistence of India and Pakistan that Jammu and Kashmir is a bilateral and not trilateral issue. Mirwaiz, Shah, Malik and Lone, to mention only a few, advocate the view that Jammu and Kashmir is a trilateral issue and India, Pakistan and Kashmiris are the three parties to the so-called Kashmir dispute. The US, the UK and the European Union (EU) also endorse the view that Jammu and Kashmir is a bilateral issue, notwithstanding the fact that they also talk about the need to take into consideration the views of the people of Kashmir. Geelani, on the other hand, wants India to quit Kashmir all at once so that Jammu and Kashmir becomes part of Pakistan. Like Mirwaiz, Geelani also says day in and day out that the bilateral talks between India and Pakistan would not help resolve the issue. The international opinion is such that doesn't really favour these Kashmiri separatists and, hence, the need for a new strategy: extend their area of influence and enlist the support of non-Muslims for the so-called freedom struggle, which right now is confined to a few localities in Kashmir valley despite this struggle being more than 22-year-old.
The other factor is the internal situation in Pakistan. Pakistan, which is deeply involved in conspiratorial activities against Afghanistan in order to establish its stranglehold over this ravaged and Taliban-infested country after the US quits is facing a grave threat to its own territorial integrity. The North West Frontier Province and Baluchistan are posing a serious challenge and Islamabad has been frequently taking recourse to aerial bombardment to eliminate the rebels in these areas adjoining Afghanistan. Pakistan is also facing trouble in the Gilgit-Baltistan region where the majority community (Shiite Muslims) is up in arms against Islamabad demanding not only action against the Sunnis who are busy in changing the demographic profile of this strategic region adjoining China but also demanding a sort of autonomy from Pakistan. The fact of the matter is that the ethnic and religious conflicts in Pakistan plus its deep involvement in AF-PAK border and estranged relations with the US and many a western country have created a situation that doesn't permit Islamabad to play the kind of role in Kashmir it hitherto used to play.
It's no wonder then that these Kashmiri separatists are feeling isolated. It is to surmount this problem and remain somewhat relevant in the State that they have planned to spread their tentacles beyond Kashmir. Their suggestion that the displaced Kashmiri Hindus should return to their homes and hearths in the Valley should also be viewed in this context. The return of the displaced Kashmiri Hindus to the Valley would help them, they believe, dispel the impression that the separatist movement in Kashmir is confined to just one Muslim sect.
Will the Hurriyat leaders succeed in their game plan? The answer just cannot be yes. They made similar attempts in Jammu and Ladakh in the past but with no result. As a matter of fact, they had to face the people's ire each time they tried to advocate their pernicious ideology in Jammu province. So much so that they failed to evoke any positive response even from the followers of the religion they themselves follow. Similarly, they would not succeed in roping in the displaced Kashmiri Hindus. Yes, there are a few black sheep in the community of the displaced Kashmiri Hindus, but they cannot play the role the Hurriyat leaders would want the community as a whole to play. In any case, the sinister game-plan of the Kashmiri separatists has to be comprehensively defeated.
