7 of family among 10 killed in sumo mishap

KISHTWAR, Apr 28: In yet another tragic accident in the district, seven members of a family were among 10 people killed and four others sustained injuries when a Tata sumo met with an accident near Dugga Saroor on Dhar-Drabshala road, about 40 km from here, today.
As soon as the news of the accident reached Kishtwar, police and civil authorities rushed to the spot and started the rescue operation with the help of locals.
Additional Deputy Commissioner, Kishtwar, Jatinder Kumar Singh said that the ill-fated vehicle (JK17/0163) was on its way from Dhar to Drabshala when its driver lost control over it and it fell into a deep gorge.Nine persons were killed on the spot, while another succumbed to his injuries at Thathri hospital, he added.
Singh said that 14 persons were travelling in the Sumo. Of the four injured, two received minor injuries and were discharged after first-aid.
Seriously injured Des Raj, an employee of NHPC, Kishtwar, was airlifted to GMCH, Jammu. Anikeet (3), son of Subash Kumar, was admitted to the district hospital, Kishtwar.
The bodies of 10 persons were later handed over to their families for last rites. They were identified as driver Govind Ram, son of Hem Raj of Mandar, Pardeep Kumar, son of Om Raj of Kukarwas, Sapna Devi, daughter of Des Raj, Anita Devi, wife of Subash Kumar, Mukti Devi, wife of Des Raj, Sheetal, daughter of Des Raj, Sandeep Kumar, son of Om Raj, Jagdish Kumar, son of Krishan Lal, Vishal Kumar, son of Des Raj, all residents of Kalchanda Drabshala, and Ranjeet Kumar, son of Mohan Lal of Sharoti Drabshala.
Official sources said that the family of Des Raj was returning to Kishtwar after attending a marriage ceremony.The district administration provided the financial assistance of Rs 3,000 each to the next of kin of the deceased.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has expressed his grief and shock over the tragic accident and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 1 lakh each in favour of the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 10,000 to the injured.
