| Sarpanches, Panches to observe hunger strike on May 1 | | Panchayati Raj a joke, PRM | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 29: The Panches and Sarpanches have plans to observe hunger strike on May 1 to press their demand for empowerment of panchayats. The panches and sarpanches owing allegiance to National Conference and peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have joined hands and formed a coordination committee. The committee that works under the banner of JK Panchayati Raj Movement took the decision of observing hunger strike on May 1 at a meeting held at Chadoora in Budgam district Saturday. The convener of the Movement, Shahnawaz Sultan in a statement said: "We the Sarpanches & Panches of most of the districts of valley are already working in close coordination with each other so that issues related to 73rd amendment of J&K Pancha yati Raj Act are taken up with the authorities more rigorously. A joint coordination committee of NC, PDP and few congress Sarpanches has already been formed and we held a Conference in Srinagar few weeks back regarding empowering of panchayats in J&K , but the Govt seems to be doing nothing ." A group of Sarpanches & Panches from Jammu region led by Shafiq Mir are also expected to join the hunger strike. The strike shall be observed at LAl CHowk, Srinagar, Shahnawaz said. He threatened indefinite strike incase the demands are not met. "Why is article 370 an impediment for extending 73 amendment? Why our Govt has extended MG NREGA in toto into J&K ? NREGA is also a central law ? Why has J&K Govt extended AFSPA, Disturbed Area Act and POTAto J&K ?", he questioned. |
