Army allowing supporters of Kashmiri separatists to denounce Delhi
"Enhancing Jammu and Kashmir's Pride"

RUSTAM
JAMMU, Apr 29: Army's 15 Corps organized a two-day seminar on the topic "Enhancing Jammu and Kashmir's Pride". It was held on April 28 and 29 in the Srinagar's Badami-bagh Cantonment Auditorium. The se-minar was the brainchild of General
Officer Commanding (GOC) of 15 Corps Lt Gen S A Hasnain, who had been organizing such discussions and debates ever since his posting in Kashmir with a view to "bridging the gaps between Army and the Kashmiri youth". "The seminar", according to him, was "aimed at getting an overall opinion from various speakers and the august gathering about some of the crucial issues which impinge on the pride of the people of Jammu and Kashmir".
Some of those who spoke and attended the seminar included Lt Gen KT Parnaik, Northern Army chief; Major Gen Gurdeep Singh, General Officer Commanding, Counter Insurgency Force (Victor); S M Sahai, Inspector General of Police Kashmir zone; S S Bloeria, Vice-Chancellor, Jammu Central University; Siddique Wahid, former Vice-Chancellor of Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Kashmir; Maj Gen (Retd) Raj Mehta; Mushtaq Ahmed, Chairman J&K Bank; Dr Suba Chandran, Director, IPCS, New Delhi; Nitin Pai; Madhu Kishwar, a well-known protagonist of self-rule and great friend of separatists, including pro-Pakistan Syed Ali Shah Geelani; Sameer Yasir, IUST; and Ajay Shukla, journalist. Students from Kashmir University, IUST and various Kashmir colleges were also there in the seminar hall in full strength.
All right-thinking people, who vouch for democracy, secularism, territorial integrity of India and want its sovereignty to be defended at whatever cost, should appreciate such debates, seminars and interactions. However, one would certainly question the rationale and intentions behind the move of the Army to ensure the presence in the seminar of persons like Madhu Kishwar and Siddique Wahid who have all through sided with and promoted the Kashmiri separatists and what they stand for or what they have been striving to achieve since decades. The organizers of the seminar did vitiate the proceedings of the seminar by allowing Madhu and Wahid to attack the Indian State and express views no true Indian would ever appreciate. That Madhu and Wahid would accuse New Delhi of "playing a mischievous role in political and social affairs of Kashmir" was a foregone conclusion. That the likes of Madhu would also condemn the security forces involved in anti-insurgency operations in Kashmir was also a foregone conclusion.
It would not be out of place to refer to here what Madhu and Wahid, who had operated together in New Delhi a number of times and also participated in some of the RSS/BJP-sponsored debates on Jammu & Kashmir, said in the seminar in the very presence of some top-ranking Army and CRPF officials. Madhu reportedly said: "My head hangs in shame when I look back at the policies of the Government of India vis-à-vis Jammu and Kashmir (read Kashmir)…We must stand united in condemning the excesses by security forces…Urge for federalism in India should have begun from Jammu and Kashmir". Of course, she also took on the Kashmiris for "not condemning the violence by militants". "If they (Kashmiris) would have stood against the militant atrocities, things would have been different," she was quoted as saying by a Kashmir-based English language daily. As for Wahid, he, according to the same daily, said: "New Delhi, Islamabad and Kashmiris should move towards the political resolution. Kashmir was the only State which had firm federal relationship with India but it was surreptitiously and systematically eroded and that erosion has brought us here".
There is no need to catalogue here the implications of what Madhu and Wahid said in the seminar. For, even a naïve will take no time in understanding the meaning and implications of what these mercenaries shamelessly said in the Army and the CRPF officials. The question to be asked is: Why did the Army send an invite to Madhu and Wahid? Why? The organizers of the seminar have to explain. They have to explain as to why they allowed Madhu and Wahid to pour venom on the Indian State and security forces. Did they invite them on the insistence of the Congress-dominated UPA Government, which seems determined to compromise the Indian position in Jammu and Kashmir in order to pander to Pakistan and Kashmiri separatists and communalists? The organizers have to inform the nation as to what motivated them to extend an invite to Madhu and Wahid.
