1/28/2007 12:42:05 AM
JAMMU | JAN 27
The opposition National Conference today cornered the coalition govt during the question hour while referring to a grenade attack on a tourist bus near Dal Gate during the last tourist season.
They wanted to know from the tourism minister Dilawar Mir about the political affiliations of the youth, who had been detained in connection with the grenade attack and later released.
The leader of the Opposition, Abdul Rahim Rather said," the issue is very serious and the house has the right to know the details of the investigation at the consequent release of the detainee". He said the issue is important because tourist bus had been attacked. “We do not want to get maligned by the incident because tourists, who come to our state are our guests.”
Tourism Minister Dilawar Mir in his reply evaded the question put forth by opposition and said “We should not give undue publicity to a single incident of grenade attack because bigger incidents have taken place in various other cities”.
Even before he could he could complete his statement, the NC members besides Usman Majid of PDF stood up from their seats and criticized the minister for not giving a direct reply to the question they had asked regarding the identity of the youth.
Dr Mehboob Beg of National Conference also drew attention of the Tourism Minister to investigate whether their was involvement of any vested interest from neighboring state of Himanchal Pradesh.
When Tourism Minister again stood up and said the concern raised by members from the opposition benches were justified, NC legislators shouted from their seats, asking “Why are you silent on political affiliations of the youth.”
Coming to the rescue of his colleague, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad intervened and informed the house that since incidents of grenade attacks on tourists have gone up the state government had announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh for anyone providing vital information about the identity of the grenade thrower.
Azad said large number of people were arrested on the bases of these inputs.
The reply, however, did not satisfy the NC members and they started shouting slogans “yeh suspense kya hai, hamare sawal ka jawaab nahin aya, sarkar kyun khamosh hai.”
On this Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad told the Legislative Assembly that all 40 persons apprehended on the charges of throwing grenades on tourists were locals and no person from outside the state has been found involved in the incidents. Describing such acts most unfortunate, he said that with regard to providing specific information about the issue he will reply in detail either on Monday or when the grants of Home Department would be discussed in the House.
Replying Mr. Baig’s queries about arrest of some person from Himachal Pradesh involved in grenade throwing on tourists, Chief Minister said all arrested youths are locals and no one was from outside the state and added that due to incentives and rewards announced by the state government for the person giving positive and effective clue about the grenade throwing incidents, arrests have been made on such clues provided by the people.
