Traders continue to repose 'faith' in Prof Gupta......! | Chamber poll results shocking for BJP....? | | early times report Jammu, Apr 29: The results of elections to CCI Jammu declared late last night may be seen on expected lines by the observers who watched this crucial contest with keen interest , it has brought to fore the changing mindset of traders in terms of its 'stubborn' affiliation with BJP and its cohorts which remained dominant and defined the makeup of the Chamber in previous polls . The polls and the strategy of both trader voters changed this time and the results, no matter unpalatable to the party only went on to show BJP's waning influence over the trader body which is an important institution in the region. Though BJP is understood to have not played any direct role in the chamber polls this time, but most of the partymen who wield influence over the traders lobby could not get the structure of the CCI body this time as per their liking and choice. Sources said , even as the party outwardly neither supported nor opposed any lobby of candidates during the run upto elections this time, but it did not either want YV Sharma's re election as president for more than one reason. The party leadership for the last two years gave call for Jammu bandh for a number of occasions, which it feels was not fully supported by the incumbent president . Though Sharma is believed to have given priority to the interests of the traders in all such moves that were defined by political overtures, it was at times mistaken or understood as he toeing the government line. Nevertheless traders, particularly those believed to be hardcore supporters of BJP reposed faith again in Sharma and enabled his smooth re election as president. However, one more significant development with regard to the results of the chamber polls is the election of Arun Gupta as Secretary General, who is a family member of Prof Chaman Lal Gupta, a leader of the rival faction of the party. Though he was not openly supported by Prof Chaman Lal nor his party as political outfit, but it goes without saying that there were many elements within BJP who never wanted Arun Gupta to emerge victorious for apparent reasons. His selection has certainly augured well for his prestigious position within the prestigious body but it has also reflected faith and affiliation of most of the traders towards the veteran politician. More importantly, it is the timing of the chamber polls that is deemed to be important for Prof Chaman Lal Gupta, for this kind of faith and support has come at a time when main party leaders including those from the central leadership who come here very often , claim rather declare the rival faction of BJP is no challenge to the party or its prospects when it comes to contests. It remains to be seen whether this development shall have any impact on the poll prospects in either of the factions in forthcoming Local Bodies polls.
