It's time for concrete action on ground | J&K BJP | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 30: Kashmiri leaders in and outside the State Government have intensified their activities to put pressure on the powers-that be in New Delhi and make them accept their demands. Some of them have even gone to the extent of asserting that it is the people of the State and not New Delhi, who are the chief determinants and that it is they and they alone who have the authority to decide their own political fate. In other words, they have challenged the very union of the State with New Delhi. They are also demanding immediate discussion and implementation of the report that was submitted to the Union Government by the Interlocutors last October. In addition, they have been criticizing the Army's stand on the AFSPA. People in Jammu had been expecting that the local BJP leadership, which claims that theirs' is an ultra-nationalist party that stands for the unity and integrity of India, that stands for the empowerment of Jammu province, that stands for the abrogation of Article 370 and that recognizes and appreciates the supreme sacrifices of the Army, would react, if not act, considering the nature of provocation these developments had caused. But nothing of this sort happened. The BJP neither acted nor reacted in the real sense of the term, thus indicating its indifferent attitude towards those working against the legitimate interests of the people of Jammu province and the country. The local BJP leadership is, it appears, incapable of understanding the implications of the Kashmiri leadership's formulations on the State, as also of what Pakistan has been doing to make India quit the strategic Siachen and further its geo-political interests in this region, notwithstanding the resolution the BJP working committee adopted yesterday on Gilgit-Baltistan. Had it not been so, the local BJP leadership would have surely reacted, if not acted. Or, should one conclude that the local BJP leadership is hand-in-glove with the Kashmiri leadership and it shares the views of the Kashmiri leadership? It is for the BJP leadership to clarify why have they stopped acting or reacting. The sooner it clarifies, the better it would be for the party. Otherwise, the people of Jammu province would dub the local BJP leaders as the agents of the Kashmiri leadership, as they describe the Jammu-based Congress, NC and similar other leaders as the representatives of the Kashmiri leadership in this region. One can understand that the local BJP leadership is passing through a very critical phase. One can also understand that there is infighting in the party. But one fails to understand why those at the helm are not making their presence felt by making right noises at right time and identifying themselves with the people's sentiments. It is this that has created serious doubts even in the minds of the ardent supporters of the BJP. The BJP leadership would do well to realize that their press statements and press conferences have failed to produce any result because what they have been trying to convey through the media is not appealing. People want from this party some concrete action on the ground and not mere hollow statements, coupled with hollow threats. The outcome of the two-day working committee of the party has been no different. |
