Rajouri, Poonch marathon touring: Not a random exercise | Having crossed 'midway', Omar begins consolidation 'moves' | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 30: In his marathon visit of the twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has made a bid to set the things right on more than one front, albeit using the political trumpet in every rally he addressed almost at a stretch for four days. This was Omar Abdullah's hectic ever political touring to these districts, once considered to be the strong bastions of his party. Days after he took over the reins as working president, an onus his father gave to him, the son has commenced the task religiously initiating the 'assignment' from these two districts. The choice of the two districts by Omar Abdullah was not just a random one. It is with a sense of purpose and the timing too is being seen by the observers 'appropriate,' Omar's hectic touring to places in the two districts is to been in perspective of his endeavour to rebuild a contact with the party cadres and enthuse a new spirit of hope and optimism in the workers, a beginning that was needed by the party high command badly in view of certain harsh ground realities. This goes without saying that most of the constituencies until 2008 were political stronghold of the NC where out of 7 seats 5 were in its fold. PDP made maiden entry with one seat each in Rajouri and Poonch at the expense of NC in 2008 polls. And after that PDP never sat back instead moved on with zest involving leaders at the high command level who have been making frequent visits to the twin districts to places other than Darhal and Mendhar which they grabbed in last Assembly polls. There is no denying back that PDP leadership has been able to make inroads and create substantiate support base, as a preliminary exercise for any party to expand its base in new places. While NC leadership did not actually ignore or neglect these places post 2008, but it has also failed to keep intact or retain its base at all the places as strong as it used to be earlier. Despite being in power it could not nourish and groom the political base nor could explore of getting back the lost grounds to its rival. It is in context of this realization as also the increasing ambitions of its own ally Congress in trying to widen the base and expand and have control over more constituencies than it has at present. J&K PCC president Prof Saif-u-Din Soz's occasional and politically measured tours and trips to the twin districts cannot be overlooked in this context. Omar's marathon visits therefore can be seen as wake up call to retain and capture in terms of the political base and cadres, workers dithering away in different directions. Omar, the working president tried to pick up the weakened threads with workers by addressing them with core points and issues. Apart from moral boosting calls of need for unity and keeping the fire of Sher-e-Kashmir aglow with the expressions like his dreams of Naya Kashmir, political solution to K problem ….., peace on borders not possible without shadow of gun etc etc, all reflect his attempt to strike the chord with political slogans, almost in a similar tone and tenor PDP leadership talks in these two districts. Omar and his father are very much aware that it is a little over midway towards 2014 and therefore the pitch has to be raised occasionally, which is why he chose it days ahead of closure of Darbar in the winter capital after which he and his Government would remain busy in the summer capital for six months. But the moot question remains, will the party keep up the tempo and momentum , rather will there be consistency the manner PDP has been showing at many places in Jammu this winter…? |
