Various trade unions pay tributes to 'May Day martyrs' | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 1: In connection with the May Day, various trade unions and members of the working class organized rallies and functions across the State and paid rich tributes to the May Day Martyrs of Chicago. Progressive Students Association (PSA) in collaboration with the Non-gazetted Employees Union Jammu University observed International Labours Day which is popularly known as May Day in university campus today. The students and employees assembled outside Dean Academic Affairs (DAA) to mark this historic day. In the onset of programme a two minute silence prayer to express regards to the Martyrs' of the May Day who on 1st May 1886 in Chicago USA where one million labour unitedly organised a protest rally to demand minimum fixed working hours. President of the Non-gazetted Employees Union Karishan addressed the gathering and briefed about the historic facts of the May Day. On this occasion he also highlighted demands of the employees. Mulkh Raj Chairman of Union, PSA activists Neena and M S Bhatti also spoke on the occasion. In a similar occasion Panthers Trade Union (PTU) inaugurated by Harsh Dev Singh MLA & Working Chairman JKNPP at ERA Park Railway Station, Jammu today in connection with the May Day (Labour Day) celebrations to pay homage to workers, who were killed by the police at Hay Market Square Chicago during the year 1886. On this occasion a two minutes silence was observed in their respect in the martyrs. S Daljit Singh, Chairman PTU alleged that the same situation is prevailing in India particularly in the Jammu and Kashmir state where people, workers, labourers and government employees are harassed. "Industrial workers, labourers engaged in multinational firms, big industrial houses are exploited by the capitalists and are not paid according to their caliber and ability and qualification corresponding to their working hours, he added. S Daljit Singh urged upon the government and big business offices to put and end to the atrocities committed on their employees and pay them their dues by solving their just problems. Anita Thakur (State General Secretary), Jagdev Singh (Coordination Secretary), Suresh Gupta and Kulbir Singh (Vice-Presidents PTU), M.R. Bhumagi and Ajay Jamwal (State General Secretaries PTU), Rajinder Singh Manju and Maqbool Malik (State Secretaries), Raghubir Singh Biloria & S. Paramjeet Singh Marshall (Provincial Vice-Presidents) and others also participated May Day memorial occasion. Meanwhile Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) Jammu & Kashmir also organized May Day function today at Satwari in which Minister for Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation Raman Bhalla was present as Chief Guest. Shiv Kumar Sharma President INTUC Jammu and Kashmir presided over the function. In the onset Raghubir Singh Chib General Secretary INTUC J&K read and presented the charter of demands highlighting various long pending demands of the working class. Chief Guest Minister for Revenue and Relief Raman Bhalla assured that he will certainly adopt concrete and affective measures to get the demands settled at all concerned levels.
