| Toilet project in limbo over non-availability of land | | | JAMMU | JAN 27 Although the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has sanctioned fifty public toilets under the Public Toilet Construction Plan in Jammu City but work has commenced only at 10 sites. Sources revealed that non-availability of land was the reason that work could not be started for construction of the public toilets. Sulabh International has been awarded the contract for constructing these toilets. Apart from non-availability of land, it is being alleged that JMC has left several areas where public toilets were needed urgently. Instead, influential people have managed to get these projects allotted in their areas even where public toilets exists. According to sources, these sites were allotted by JMC during a different political dispensation. On the flawed site selection, the shopkeepers at the General Bus Stand citing an example said that no toilet is available on BC Road right from the Hari Niwas Palace to Jewel Chowk. “There is maximum rush of daily travelers on this stretch but the dearth of toilets causes great nuisance to the visitors. The situation worsens during the Amarnath Yatra as JMC does not allot space for toilets,” they said and added that Rehari Chowk, Janipur main road and area out side the railway station as well as Airport needed public toilets urgently but they have been left out of the plan. After Bikram Chowk no public toilet can be found at Satwari, Gangyal, Kunjwani or even thickly populated areas of the city like Raghu Nath Bazar, Purani Mandi, City Chowk, Link Road, Residency Road, Kachi Chhawni, Jain Bazaar and Rajinder Bazar where a large number of people along with their families visit the markets daily, said Atul Rajpal, a resident of Rajinder Bazar. “Owing to the dearth of toilets in the area, the ladies particularly face discomfort” he added. Meanwhile, Rohit Verma, an official at the Cultural Aademy said that there is an immediate need of public toilet at the Jewel Chowk.
