Weather office to install advance warning systems for Amarnath yatra | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 1 : The regional Meteorological Department today decided to establish Advance Warning Systems (AWSs) at two base camps and the Amarnath Shrine to issue regular weather forecast during the yatra, starting from June 25. To provide accurate forecast of likely weather on given date, the Met Department will establish three AWSs -- one each at Baltal and Pahalgam base camps and one at the Holy cave. This was decided at a meeting chaired by Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (CEO) Navin Kumar Choudhary. The meeting was attended among others by Met Department Director Sonam Lotus here. To ensure better forecasting of weather situation for the smooth conduct of Yatra 2012, several initiatives were being taken. The AWSs would provide better and more accurate forecast of likely weather on a given date. The Met Department also decided to install weather display boards at the Nunwan Pahalgam and Baltal camps for the benefit of yatris. The department would also provide instant warning regarding any weather related disturbances to all authorities concerned through SMS service. Lotus said the department was in the process of establishing Doppler Radar at Srinagar for which the procurement process was at an advanced stage. 'Once established, this will provide a huge facility for more accurate weather prediction in the Kashmir valley,' he added. This will benefit not only the yatra but also the general masses in the Valley throughout the year. |
